Voice of Domestic helpers

A lot of domestic helpers in Swaziland are naive of their employment rights and so their masters are taking advantage of their unawareness and they are trying to exploit them. Government has intervened stipulated that they are allowed to free housing, 12 day annual leave, compassionate leave, free uniform, a E409 minimum wage, among others. According to a survey among maids, they are in fear of losing their jobs, so they never dream of questioning the way of employers even though they treat them worse. They never demand their respects for their rights. Some of the domestic helpers are saying that due to lack of education, they are ready to do whatever as commanded by their employers, without demanding their rights.

Lindeni Ntshangase, domestic helpers said that she is not aware that domestic helpers had rights and she says" I thought that rights were for the educated. If some one can talk on our behalf, we can be grateful because we are scared of asking anything concerning our rights in fear of losing our jobs". Many of them are having fear of losing job and also because of the lack of awareness they are not ready to fight for their rights. Another domestic helper Phumzile Kunene said that she is aware of rights but the situation does not allow her to put them into effect.

Our employers take benefit of the fact that there is lack of jobs in the country and that there are many people seeking for the type of jobs we are doing. What I know and believe is that God is watching all that is happening and one day He´s going to react. That´s all I can say" said by Phindile Nkhambule.
