Demand for Male Nurse

The traditional view of nursing as a female job is disappearing as salaries rise and more jobs open, professionals in the field say. Job security, flexibility in hours and location, and the desire to help people are among reasons males also entering into this field. Today many opportunities for males. Salaries have improved to the point where it's attractive for a wage earner to view nursing as a career.

Generally, between 12 and 15 percent of the total population of students that look at nursing are men. Tuition for the two-year program is about $11,000 for area residents. The starting salary for a registered nurse is about $40,000.

Ingham Regional Medical Center said 85 of its nearly 700 licensed nurses are men. The base pay rate for new registered nurses is $22.12 an hour, with higher salaries for those with more experience. Five of the 25 new nursing are men. The boom in health care employment is leading many men to the profession, particularly midlife career changers. So there will be increasing demand on long-term health care services for men.
