Shortage of Nurses

Scarcity of nurses arises because the nurses are forced to take care of entire ward with more than 100 patients and also they are forces work for 16 to 24 hours a day and paid less. So the both entry level and experienced nurses are migrating to North America and Canada in search of jobs with good pay.NAJ president Edith Allwood-Anderson called on Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller to take immediate steps to ease the shortage.

Indeed, Ministry of Health Annual Report in 2001 stated that nationwide vacancy rates stood at 37 per cent for nurses positions, 28 per cent for public health nurses, 17 per cent for nurse practitioners, and 61 per cent for assistant nurses.

The nursing colleges and universities in that country are struggling hard to expand enrolment levels to meet the growing demand for nursing care.
