Nanny convicted of child abuse for fracturing baby skull

A nanny was crooked of child abuse for sadistically shaking a 2 1/2-month-old baby boy and causing skull fractures and brain hemorrhages, but a jury acquitted her of intentionally injuring the child, prosecutors said. Minerva Rojas, 28, of East Palo Alto faces up to six years in prison after being convicted Thursday by a San Mateo County Superior Court jury. The charge she was cleared of, willful cruelty to a child could have doubled her sentence.

Rojas was under arrest March 17 after police reacted to her 911 call and found the baby unconscious at his Redwood Shores home. Rojas told investigators the baby fell off a couch, but an examination later discovered that he was shaken in a cruel manner. Redwood City police Detective Mike Reynolds testified that Rojas acknowledged throwing the baby to the ground because she got frustrated. The baby was released from the hospital after a week and was in good state, but doctors said it may take years to decide whether he tolerated permanent damage or not.
