`Nanny' bills: pitting safety against rights and liberties

In fact, measures are meant to protect children from their parents very rarely such as the anti-spanking proposal and another that would prohibit parents from smoking in cars where kids are present. Some of the measures are meant to help people eat right, such as the bills for necessitating chain restaurants not only to display the calorie content of meals but also to trans fats from both restaurants and school cafeterias. There are also measures meant to protect the environment as well, such as Levine's light bulb bill, which would cut greenhouse gas emissions by pushing people for using compact fluorescent bulbs. All the measures irk Republicans in ways that few other kinds of bills could.
