The Democratic majority seems to be carving wood instead of carving meaningful policies taking too much of time on its hands. Just have a look at the preoccupation with headline-grabbing legislation that tries to govern all the ungovernable human behaviors while real problems facing adults and children go unaddressed instead of truly tackling traffic congestion, violence, overcrowded prisons, overextended courts, teetering-on-the-brink pension systems, the deficit, cellar-dwelling schools, diabetic kids, public health care, over-regulation and taxes that scare away employers, lawmakers seem intent on spending time and taxpayer money addressing niche issues. Nanny-state proposals get written not because they are necessary but because they are easy as well as tend to detain media attention.
